These Shoes Were Made for Talking

The Cuming museum has a large collection of costume, footwear and related accessories from all around the world. Most of what survives in museum collections tends to have been for special occasions only or for the extremely wealthy. But we do have a few examples of "ordinary" footwear such as the sabots (C02322), included in this selection. Lucky charm symbols are often found in the shape of shoes and many countries have a history of using shoes or shoe symbols to ward off bad luck or to represent a long life or journey.
