DescriptionAmulet in the form of a wedjat eye, the lunar left eye of Horus. In Ancient Egyptian mythology the eye was plucked out by Horus' rival Seth when they fought over the throne, and was later restored by one of Thoth, Hathor or Isis, depending ont the version of the story. The injury and healing associated with the wedjat eye represents the waxing and waning of the moon. The wedjat eye is a common form of amulet, and a powerful symbol of regeneration. Its protective powers meant that it was often placed on mummy wrappings. It was also worn by the living. The wedjat eye amulet first appeared in the late Old Kingdom (2700-2184 BC). Amulets ceased to be used when mummification was no longer practiced in the Roman Period (30 BC-AD 395).
