'Cardinal' was the name of a short type of woollen cloak originally popularly worn throughout the 18th century and early 19th century. It was usually red and was a practical, warm, every day garment for many women.
When it became fashionable to wear black cloaks at the end of the 18th century, cardinal cloaks were also made in this colour, often of silk.
