Owl

Owl

Date: 1961
Medium: Etching and Aquatint
Object number: PT0157
DescriptionThis etching of an owl falls outside Roberts' most notable works. Roberts was a painter mostly of disturbing, eerie circus figures, whereas this skilled and excellently draughted depiction of an owl instead echoes his technical training at the Royal College of Art (1947-51). Roberts' was influenced by his etching and engraving teacher, Robert Austin (Head of the Engraving School). Austin is regarded as one of Britain's most eminent engravers of the twentieth century and placed significant weight on the importance of technique and draughtsmanship. It is clear from this work that Austin left a lasting impression on an young and impressionable Roberts.
