DescriptionThe scene northward in the 18th century from the high land of Camberwell Hill.Denmark Hill, with its gently sloping ground to the fields and market gardens around Southwark, became a desirable place for men of means to build their houses. The area also gave them space to lay out pleasant grounds for their family and visitors to enjoy. This engraving shows how the residents of Denmark Hill could partake of the 'country-side' but be only a short horse or carriage ride away from the City of London. Most of these properties were later demolished and replaced by whole streets of terraced houses (and later flats).
A fine engraver, Lerpiniere produced genre subjects, marine views and portraits.
