DescriptionTombstone for the murderer Fredrick George Manning. He was executed in 1849, along with his wife Maria Manning, for the murder of her lover, Patrick O'Connor. His initials "F.G.M." are carved into the top of the stone, EXD 13th Nov 1849 are carved below.

Charles Dickens witnessed the spectacle and it prompted him to start a campaign to end public hangings. The tombstone was taken from Horsemonger Lane prison, now Harper Road, SE1. Taken from the wall of the exercise yard where the Mannings (Frederick and Maria) were buried.
