The frequent appearance of the peacock in both Crane's wallpaper and fabric designs reflect his interest in all things Japanese. Edward Godwin's 1873 Peacock design for Jeffrey & Co was inspired by Japanese medallions and badges. Crane greatly admired Godwin's work and closely follows its stylised wing form in the bird wings in Woodnotes.
This fondness for the Peacock as a design motif and Crane's mastery in its depiction did not go unnoticed. The frieze and paper was awarded a gold medal at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1889.
