Walter Crane (1815 - 1915)

Date: 1896
Dimensions:
1130mm x 570mm
Medium: Woodcut
Object number: PT0790
DescriptionColour print from wood blocks 113 x 57cm, 1896.
This late example by Walter Crane combines both a close repeat of the basic vertical design of Dandelion flowers and seed-heads, Aquilegia and Bluebell with a twisting curve of open Daisy flowers. Its simple layout is the strength of spatial composition. The harmonious balance of the coloured flowers is challenged by the eye catching white Daisy heads placed in the form of a semi-reclining question mark. The placing of each open flower is carefully chosen even to the extent of placing a single bud to draw the elements together.
