A stunning creation echoing Morris's sense of composition and rhythm; but in a new and vital way Mawson demonstrates a new confidence in his ability to originate wholly new designs, that no longer use Morris as a prop to give legitimacy to his designs. Fine Art in the 1890s brought a new awareness of the visual possibilities and impact of the massing of different colours like deep blues and reds together. Mawson has chosen to go one step further by adding mica on top of the colours to heighten the effect. The white flat leaf forms with only their veining coloured make a suitable foil and balance for the colour that surrounds them, the proportion being approximately half white to the other colours.
