DescriptionThis tiger skull is mounted on a wooden presentation board because it is one of the few relics from the Surrey Zoological Gardens which used to exist just off Walworth Road in London between 1831 and 1872. The tiger may have been one of the animals visited by Queen Victoria during her 1838 visit. As animal welfare and feeding habits were not as well understood as they are today, the tiger skull shows signs of malnutrition. Despite this, the zoo always boasted they lost fewer animals than its rival Regents Zoo (now London Zoo) which had opened in 1828.
