The Camberwell arm of the Grand Surrey Canal, now drained and filled in, terminated at the junction of Camberwell Road and Albany Road (now the site of Burgess Park). Limestone and coal was brought in by boat and burnt in the kiln to provide lime for building work. Another kiln still stands towards St. George's Church.
