DescriptionSmall green glass bottle. Found at the Steelyard in 1865.

Unfortunately, little archaeological evidence for Roman glass making remains. As a result, much of what is understood about the practice comes from comparisons with later Byzantine glass making. Most Roman glass would have been this pale green colour, as at this time the ability to produce colourless glass was not known outside Egypt and the Middle East. However, by 100 CE, glass of all kinds was as ubiquitous as plastic is today, and colourless glass began to appear in Roman architecture. It is unknown how common this would have been in Britain though.
