Amphora

Amphora

Object name: Amphora
Date: 40-100
Medium: Terracotta
Object number: LDCUM1931.003.001
DescriptionA 'carrot' amphora with ribbed decoration. This type of amphora is named due its long tapering shape and ribbed decoration which make it similar in appearance to a carrot. The bottom of the amphora is missing but would have tapered off to a point and been decorated with the same ribbed decoration seen here. It would have been used for importing exotic fruits into Roman Britain.

It was originally produced in the Eastern Mediterranean, most likely Egypt or Palestine.

One of 20 items of Roman material excavated in Talbot Yard, Borough High Street in 1918.
Culture: Ancient Egyptian
