DescriptionThe Wednesday night 'King's Club' launched in 1983 at that "sumptuous pink and grey oasis in the suburban desert of Peckham", The King's Arms on the corner of Peckham Rye. Run by prolific local gay DJ Barry Neal and frequented by the cognoscenti such as Ian McGhee of Bang (London’s first gay superclub on Charing Cross Road) and Peter King of Soho's The Alibi, it was a low-key venue and it isn't known whether King's was particularly successful or long-lasting. The gay press at the time liked it though with HIM magazine noting that despite Peckham being "a thoroughly frightful place to live" the night was worth it, having that 'indefinable something' and being so fun it was "Like a private party in someone's penthouse".On View
