DescriptionThe site comprised the grounds of a former manor house off the Walworth Road. Acquired by Impresario Edward Cross in 1831, it became a zoological gardens which were at one time a serious rival to the zoo at Regent's Park. Sold off in 1856, the Surrey Music Hall was built on the site. Constructed from cast iron over three floors, it could hold 12, 000 spectators. This made it the largest venue in London until it was destroyed by fire in 1861.
