DescriptionBy the 1930s sailing ships were largely superseded by steam and oil driven ships. This must have been one of the last large sailing ships to deliver timber to the Surrey docks. Timber from Scandinavia and from the rest of the world was off-loaded into barges called lighters and towed by tugs further up the Thames to riverside wharves and up canals, such as to Peckham to timber warehouses.
A wood-engraver, etcher and topographical watercolourist, Janes was a prolific and popular portrayer of the London river. He lived at 70 Canonbury Park South, N1. Camberwell Council purchased many examples of his work. This was purchased from the South London Artists Exhibition at the South London Gallery in 1973((3).
