Medium: Water-colour
Object number: GA1330
DescriptionIn 1089 Cluniac Monks came to Bermondsey to found a priory. The priory became an abbey in 1399 with the appointment of Abbot John Attilburgh. Henry II spent Christmas there in 1154. When Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries in 1534, Thomas Pope bought the abbey and demolished it to build Bermondsey House. The entrance was in Abbey Street. Part of the stonework of the East gate is incorporated into No. 7 Grange Walk. Two hinges of the gate can still be seen on the outside of the house.
