DescriptionAn Act to construct the Grand Surrey Canal was passed in 1801. The canal was cut between 1807 and 1809 and was originally intended to run from Rotherhithe to Mitcham. However the scheme was limited to a three mile route from the Surrey Docks to Camberwell which opened in 1809. A branch to Peckham opened in 1826. By the 1960s most of the canal had been drained and filled in. On View
