DescriptionThere has been a church on this site for at least a thousand years. The Saxon church, probably of wood, was rebuilt in stone in 1152 by William of Gloucester, Lord of the Manor, and given to the Monks of St. Saviour, Bermondsey. Bermondsey Abbey continued to appoint vicars at St. Giles until the reign of Henry VIII. The church was burnt down in 1841 and subsequently rebuilt.
