DescriptionBronze sculpture figure of the infant Horus. It would have originally been seated on the lap of Isis. He has a side-lock on the right side of his head and his right hand finger on his lips. The figure is mounted on two dark brown wooden blocks.
Images of deities as families groups were particularly popular in Late Period Egypt. This one would have been intended to depict Isis suckling Horus. Images such as this would have been placed in temples by wealthy members of society. Both Isis and Horus were seen as protective deities - Isis due to her powerful magic, and Horus as Harpokrates (Greek for "Horus the Child" as he appears here in child form) for his power over dangerous animals. This image would also have been seen as a powerful symbol of rebirth.
