DescriptionWooden elephant bell from Shri Lanka. The bell is a hollow cylinder with a slit cut halfway in the front bottom edge. The two clappers are in two parts, with an angled arm at the top, and a separate lower mallet attached and hinged by metal rods. The clappers are at the sides, and attached to the main part of the bell by a cord that runs through holes in the sides near the top. When the bell is lifted by this cord the clappers are able to move freely and to strike the cylinder. Alternatively, the clappers will strike the cylinder as it is swung from side to side by the movement of the elephant as it walks.
