DescriptionYui (granter of wishes) wand or staff of gilt papier mache. It has decorative square spirals on the surface and a red glass gem in the middle of the stick. The head of the staff depicts the expanded flower of the Sacred Lotus, in the centre of which is set a blue glass gem.

This wand was the complimentary present of grandees to visitors. As a symbol of imperishableness and an auspicious token, it is often carried by Shinto priests.

The original catalogue identified this as from China but if it is a Shinto piece it is possibly more likely to be associated with Japan.
