DescriptionLarge cup of blackened wood. Used for drinking kava, the pounded and strained root of Piper methysticum. Preparing and drinking kava is an important part of ceremonies and social occasions throughout Melanesia and Polynesia. Note that this cup may have been acquired by Cuming in 1851 from the sale of Antiquities of Thomas Dawson.
