DescriptionKotiate or hand club of hard reddish brown wood. The notches on either side are for catching and flicking aside the opponent's weapon. There is a head carved on the handle to keep watch at the back. The kotiate may date from the late 1700s while the carved knot design was added at a much later date. Polynesia.
