DescriptionBlack leather gentleman's shoes with square toes and flat sole. Two flaps across the tongue are secured with a black satin bow. Both heels are worn down in the same direction and one shoe is made for a slightly larger foot - perhaps the wearer had problems with their feet or with walking.
Satin ribbons replaced the buckle in the early 19th Century (1820-1820) partly due to French influence. 'Down with the aristocratic shoe buckle' was a Revolutionary slogan. Lace up triple eyelets came into use in the late 1830s but formal shoes retained ribbons until 1850.
