DescriptionToby jugs have been around since the 18th century. It's not certain why they are called Toby jugs but the name may have had something to do with Sir Toby Belch in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. However another name for them is fillpot or phillpot and there was a popular song in 1761 called "The brown jug" which featured "Toby Fillpot". They are nearly always character pieces featuring something jolly and still widely collected. Staffordshire. Britain.
