DescriptionAncient Egyptian mirror. The Ancient Egyptians made mirrors from about 2900 BCE. In this type of bronze mirror one side of the flat oval disc would have been highly polished in order to provide a reflective surface and the piece would probably have had a wooden or ivory handle fitted into the prong you can see on the base. Mirrors were valued because Ancient Egyptian society regarded cosmetics as essential parts of their health regimes and religious duties. Eye makeup was particularly common across all levels of society. It indicated the protection of the gods Horus and Ra and was also believed to strengthen the eyes and protect from evil.
