Hair-Ring

Object name: Hair-Ring
Date: 2000 BC-500 AD
Dimensions:
19.05 mm
Medium: Carnelian
Object number: C00420
DescriptionCircular hair-ring. Made of semi-transparent orange carnelian, a common material for these hair-rings. A small section has been removed.

These are sometimes referred to as earrings as some have been found at the ears of the deceased. Due to the thickness, decoration and thinness of the cleft it seems unlikely that these would have been worn as earrings by the living. It is now thought that they are either hair-rings or token jewellery for the deceased person and not meant to be worn.
