DescriptionTerracotta candle snuffer in the form of a monk standing with hands clasped. He has a hollow body with which to smother the flame. These cone shapped snuffers were also called 'extinguishers'. Candle snuffers were used for putting out candles. They meant that you did not have to use your fingers or risk blowing hot wax everywhere. The Cuming original catalogue says this is from Florence, Italy.
