Stephen Willats

Stephen Willats

born 1943

Conceptual artist, editor and publisher.

Stephen Willats was born in London and studied at Ealing School of Art (1962–3). Willats edited and published Control Magazine from 1965 and was Director of the Centre for Behavioural Art in London, 1972-3. Willats is primarily a conceptual artist who is interested in art as intervention, often questioning the social interaction of arts practice by collaborating with the public. Willats’ works use a variety of mixed media including documentation, photographs, lights and electronic systems, and invites viewers to participate in a number of ways. A recurring theme is the interrelationships between people and their social environments.

Willats is represented by Victoria Miro and by public collections including the Tate, National Portrait Gallery, the Arts Council and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
