b. 1933 in Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine. Russian graphic, conceptual and installation artist. Worked for thirty years in Moscow. Reccently created installations that evoked the visual culture of the Soviet Union. Studied at Surikov Art Institute in Moscow (1957), specializing in illustration. Produced artwork for children's literature for many years. Worked as an illustrator to earn a living when avantgarde experimentation was banned. Experimented with Abstract Expressionism and neo-Surrealism. Since 1978, his art has become more conceptual and has created zhek picture displays, which parody wall newspapers and Soviet posters. These works are typical SOTS ART, a type of art he has founded, meaning a style that employs and devalues the cliches of Soviet mass culture.
