Denys Robert Short

Denys Robert Short

born 1926

Born in Devon in 1926 or 1927

Painter in oils of Welsh mining towns, and also beach scenes and interiors.

Very little is known about the artist Denys Robert Short. Short's paintings of Welsh mining towns during the 1960s and 1970s honestly capture a gloomy, grey atmosphere where the weight of industry looms heavy over the local community. Short's colour palette is muted and consists mostly of varying shades of grey and blue, further echoing the industrialised materials of coal and steel. In many of Short's scenes, streets appear empty or they contain a small number of soulless and darkened figures. Mining architecture such as pit-wheels or slag heaps frequently loom heavy in the background. Additionally, Short's paintings of interiors continue to carry a heavy sense of loss and emptiness.

Shorts paintings are held by a number of Welsh collections as well as the Southwark Art Collection. They include National Museum Wales (Amgueddfa Cymru), National Library of Wales (Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru), Pontypridd Museum, and the University of South Wales. Another London holder is Goldsmiths (University of London).
