Painter of landscapes and river scenes. Also a painter of portraits, often of children depicted amongst flora.
Cecil Leonard Burns was a late 19th century and early 20th century painter. He studied under Sir Hubert von Herkomer RA at the Bushey School of Art. Burns was an exhibitor at the Royal Academy and the Society of British Artists at Suffolk Street. He was Principal of Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts between 1897 and 1899, and acted as Principal of the Sir J.J. (Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy) School of Art in Bombay, India until 1918. Unfortunately, artworks by Burns are particularly rare due to his possessions being burnt in a docks fire in Southampton on his return from India. Paintings that do exist often depict picturesque landscapes, Indian river scenes and idealised portraits of children. Burns was an advocate of 'en plain air' painting in both watercolour and oils.
In addition to the Southwark Art Collection, one of Burns' oil paintings is held by Bushey Museum and Art Gallery. A small number of his works are held by private collections in the UK and USA.
