Painter of portraits, genre and landscapes. Also a decorator.

William Mainwaring Palin completed a five year apprenticeship at the Josiah Wedgwood & Sons works before winning scholarship to the National Art Training School at the South Kensington Museum in 1881. After spending a short period studying in Rome, Palin attended the Academie Julian in Paris. He exhibited throughout Britain and also in Paris. He was a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists, of which he became a member in 1905 and their Vice-president in 1914 (VPRBA). Palin is best known for his portraits and landscape scenes.

Palin is represented by a number of public collections including the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, Victoria and Albert Museum, Rye Art Gallery, Lancaster City Museums and the National Maritime Museum.
