Painter of portraits and church interiors in oils; also an engraver.
Arthur Paine Garratt studied at the City of London School and exhibited between 1899 and 1919. During the 1920s Garratt spent a number of years in New York. He is best known as a portraitist and received considerable success during his lifetime. Commissioned portraits include many leading people of his time such as Mary of Teck (1867-1953) Queen Consort of King George V (Government Art Collection: 15368), and the sculptor Auguste Rodin. Many of Garrett's female sitters were incredibly elegant, high-society ladies who demanded a high degree of finish and close attention to detail in their painted portraits.
Garrett is represented by public collection including the National Portrait Gallery, Government Art Collection, City of London Corporation, Horniman Museum, and the National Trust.
