John Copley

b. 1738 in Boston; d. 1815 in London. American painter. Active as a portrait painter in Boston from 1753 to 1774. Settled in London in 1775, where he spent the rest of his life, continuing to paint portraits and work as a history painter. Known for his ability to render surface textures and capturing emotional immediacy. He continued to paint even towards the end of his life, as his healthy declined.
