F. Ernest Jackson

b. 1872 in Huddersfields, d. 1945 in Oxford. Painter, draughtsman, poster designer and lithographer, mainly of figures but also flowers, landscape and architecture. Apprenticed to a firm of lithographers in Leeds. Studied at the Yorkshire College and then in Paris at the Academie Julian and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. On return to England, designed posters and practised lithography. Taught at the Central School (1902-21). One of the founders of the periodical "The Neolith" (1907) and member of the Senefelder Club (1912). Designed posters for the London Underground (from 1913). Helped found the Design and Industries Association (1915); member of the Art Workers' Guild (from 1916) and Master (1928). Instructor in Drawing at the Royal Academy Schools (1921-39).
