William Hogarth

b. 1697 in London, d. 1764 in London. English painter and engraver. Important role in establishing an English school of painting, through the quality of his painting and through campaigns to improve the status of the artist in England. Best remembered for the satirical engravings that gave the name 'Hogarthian' to low-life scenes of the period. His satirical engravings are often considered an important ancester of the comic strip. His early works were satirical and later he turned his attention to the small production of small "conversation pieces." Was also a popular portrait painter.
