Sculptor, gem engraver

Born in London (or Buckingham). He was the son of John Bacon (born c.1791 in London), a compositor. Charles was apprenticed as a seal engraver before 1841 and began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1842. He entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1846 on the recommendation of the poet, Alaric Watts (1797-1864). Bacon went on to establish a successful practice as a sculptor of statues and busts as well as a gem engraver. His son, Charles Irvine Bacon (born c.1858 in Brixton) was described as a painter and sculptor in 1881. Charles Bacon died in Bognor, Sussex and his three daughters were named as his executors.
