Michael Ayrton

b. 1921 in London, d. 1975. Sculptor, painter, printmaker, and illustrator. Also known as a theatrical designer, film maker, writer, and art critic. Studied at Heatherley's (1935), St John's Wood School, and in Paris where he shared a studio with John Minton (1938). First exhibited with Minton in 1942 at Leicester Galleries. Work is represented in public collections such as the Tate Gallery and MOMA, New York. Was influenced by Flemish art in 1936 but in 1940s his work was influenced by Sutherland and Nash. Began sculpting with bronze in the 1950s and found inspiration in Greek myths.
