b. 1901 in Bromley, Kent; d. 1983. Sculptor of figures and busts and wood engraver. Studied at Beckenham School of Art (1919-20) and under Leon Underwood (1922-26). Member of the English Wood-Engraving Society (1926); Society of Wood-Engravers (1933); London Group (1935); R.E. (1951). First commission for portrait sculpture in 1931. Designed mosaic floor, carved fountain and door fittings for the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, Stratford on Avon. Designed a sculptured glass window for the British Pavilion at the International Exhibition of Arts and Industry in Paris (1937). Was selected as one of the seven engravers to represent Britain at the Venice Biennale (1939). Worked as a technical draughtsman in the offices of aircraft and shipbuilding factories and did commissions for architectural projects during WWII. Teacher of Wood Engraving and Animal Drawing at the Central School (from 1948).
