Terry Frost

1915 - 2003

b. 1915 in Warwickshire, England; d. 2003.

Did not become an artist until he was in his 30s. Studied under Leonard Fuller; then studied at the Camberwell School of Art (1947) under Pasmore and Coldstream. Member of the Penwith Society, St. Ives (1950). He also attended the St. Ives School of Art and worked as an assistant to sculptor Barbara Hepworth (1951). First one-man exhibition in London at the Leicester Galleries (1952) and in New York at the Bertha Schaefer Gallery (1960). Other solo exhibitions included Adelson Gallery, New York (1992); Mayor Gallery, London (1994); Green on Red Gallery, Dublin McGeary Gallery, Brussels (1995); Belgrave Gallery, London (1997); Royal Academy of Arts, Sackler Galleries Beaux Arts, London (2000); Mead Gallery, University of Warwick (2001).

Taught at Bath Academy, Corsham (1952) and Leeds College of Art (1956-59). Elected a Royal Academician (1992) and knighted (1998). He worked as an abstract artist and spent most of his life living and working in south west Cornwall which was a source of inspiration for most of his work.
