Stanley William Hayter

b. 1901 in London, d. 1988 in Paris. English printmaker and painter who founded Atelier 17, an influential print workshop of the 20th century. Started career by studying chemistry and geology at King's College, London (1917-21). Moved to Paris (1926) and enrolled at the Academie Julian and studied burin engraving with the Polish artist Joseph Hecht. Began to take his own pupils (1927) and named his workshop Atelier 17 (1933). Introduced to surrealism by Yves Tanguy and Andre Masson, other Surrealists (1929). Violent imagery in his Surrealist period was influenced by his passionate response to the Spanish Civil War.
