Lack studied at Leicester College of Art and the Royal College of Art. He was elected a full member of the Royal Society of Painters, Etchers and Engravers (RE) in 1934. Lack then went to Egypt to record ancient tomb paintings and carvings but after two years he returned to England. On his arrival Lack secured the position of Art Master at Christ's College, Horsham. In 1946, and after completing military service during WWII, Lack briefly worked at Northampton School of Art before becoming a tutor in the Engraving School at the Royal College of Art. Lack also worked at other art schools including Hastings School of Art (1953-1968). He returned to Egypt and worked as a member of a Chicago University team at Luxor, dividing his time between Hastings and Egypt until his retirement in 1976. Lack exhibited widely throughout Britain and abroad, including the Royal Academy, Royal Society of Etchers, and the British Museum.

Lack is represented by both private and public collections, including the British Council, British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, and Hastings Museum and Art Gallery, among others.
