Robert Spence RE

Robert Spence RE

1871 - 1964

Born in Northumberland in 1871

Etcher of literary scenes.

Robert Spence studied at Newcastle School of Art before studying at the Slade School of Art, London, between 1892 and1895. It is believed that Spence also spent time training in Paris. From the 1890s until the 1920s, Spence etched a series of historical incidents from the Journal of George Fox, the founder of Quakerism (of which the Southwark Art Collections holds one example). Spence was elected an Associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1897 and a Fellow in 1902. He was appointed Hon. Curator of the society in 1920. Little else is known of Spence's later career.
