Phyllis Ginger

1907 - 2005

b. 1907 in New Malden in Surrey, d. 2005. Took evening classes at Kingston Art School and School of Art in Richmond. From Richmond she won a London County Council scholarship to study art full-time. Studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in Southampton Row (1936) where she focussed on illustration, which included lithography and etching. Intention to pursue this as a career rather than as an exhibiting artist. First commission was for a watercolour to draw the new Chelsea Bridge. First commission for a book came from J.M. Dent & Sons, with pen-and-ink illustrations for French short stories for "French for Adults." Interested in buildings and recording architecture. Commissioned to do drawings for the Recording Britain Scheme in Bristol, Bath and Cheltenham for a project to record of the national landscape. She was chosen along with Sir William Russell Flint, John Piper and Kenneth Rowntree. Taught at Bromley School of Art.
