Sylvia Melland

1906 - 1993

Painter and printmaker.
Born Altringham, Cheshire in 1906. Studied at Manchester College of Art; the Byam Shaw School, 1925-8; the Euston Road School, 1937-9 and the Central School, 1957-60. She travelled extensively: South Africa 1930-2, France, Poland Czechoslovakia, Scandinavia and in 1934, Paris. She was involved with the Civil Defence Artists' Group during WWII. She exhibited regularly with Royal Society of Etchers/Engravers and the Women's International Art Club and had solo exhibitions at Wertheim and Jackson Galleries. Her work is held in public collections including the V&A Museum and Manchester City Art Gallery and the BM holds 7 of her prints. She lived in London.
A retrospective exhibition was held at the Boundary Gallery in 1997.


Sylvia Melland attended the Euston Road School in the 1930s and later joined the left-wing, anti-fascist group the Artists' International Association (A.I.A.). Although initially a painter, from the 1960s onwards she concentrated almost exclusively on printmaking and was elected to the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers.
