Maqbool Fida Husain

b. 1915 in Pandharpur, Maharashtra. Indian painter, printmaker, photographer and film maker. Studied at the School of Art in Indore. Worked as a painter of cinema hoardings and, from 1941, as a designer of toys and children's nursery furniture. Paintings first attracted notice in Bombay in 1947. Assimilated ideas from Western and Indian art. Had his first solo exhibition in Bombay (1950). Work exhibited at the Salon de Mai in Paris i 1951, Venice biennales of 1953 & 55, Tokyo Biennale of 1959, the Sao Paulo biennales of 1959 & 71, and elsewhere. One-man shows in Zurich and Prague (1956), Frankfurt and Rome (1960) and Tokyo (1961).
