Massimo Campigli

Massimo Campigli

b. 1895 in Florence, d. 1971 in Tropez. Italian painter educated in Milan. When WWI ended, worked as a journalist for the newspaper "Corriere della Sera" which posted him to Paris in 1919. There he taught himself to paint. 1923 first one-man show at Galleria Bragaglia in Rome. By mid-1920s evolved a style characterized by well-rounded forms. Had one-man shows in Milan (1932, 34, 40, 42, 53), Rome (1923, 47, 53, 56), Paris (1929, 31, 38, 49, 51, 53, 57), New York (1932, 35, 36, 39), Amsterdam (1938, 46, 55), Venice (1942, 48, 53), and London (1950, 52, 57).
