Hideo Hagiwara

Hideo Hagiwara

b. 1913 in Kofu City (Yamanishi Prefecture). Lived in Korea and Manchuria (1921-1929). Studied at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and graduated at the Oil Painting Section (1938). Attended Un'ichi Hiratsuka's extracurricular woodblock printing course and became quality controller at the Takamizawa Woodblock Print Company. In 1945 he lost his house, atelier and nearly all his early works. 1950 he recovered to start painting again. Started making Sosaku Hangu, figurative and abstract prints. Known as an innovator and considered one of the best post-WWII Sosaku Hanga artists.
